Hooray, Hooray, It’s the First of May!
If summer has to come, with its blazing heat and blasts of air that feel like you opened the oven door, then we may as well celebrate with Beltane, yes? We’ve all heard the silly chant, “Hooray, hooray, it’s the First of May! Outdoor fucking begins today!” But maybe not as many people know where that originated. The first of May is properly called Beltane, at least in some traditions, and it is ancient. Ancient things are cool. The New Person at Work
So, last week my work laptop quit working. While I was waiting for a loaner laptop, I commandeered a hotel cubicle so I could get at least a couple things done. Boss ‘O Me, who sits across the aisle from said hotel cube, saw me and said, “I don’t mean to be particular, but do you want some Clorox wipes for the desk?” Yes. Yes, I did. It was filthy and gross, and the crud in the keyboard was likely going to develop a heartbeat any second. But there wasn’t another empty cube open, so I was sort of stuck with it.
The thing with the hotel cube, too, is that the computer was really slow. Like, not a whole lot faster than mine that died. So I was supernaturally bored, and had a lot of time to daydream. The Astronaut Wives Club
What can I say? Who doesn’t love learning about astronauts, even if it’s in a behind the scenes kind of way? It’s awesome to think that the processor in my phone is more powerful than the computer that landed men on the moon. Learning about the trials and tribulations the first men in space faced is fascinating. It’s too bad this book doesn’t discuss anything of the sort. Continue reading “The Astronaut Wives Club”
Trigger Warning
I adore Neil Gaiman. I love his vivid imagery, the subtlety of the stories, the unique way he has of seeing the world. He himself is awesome as well, and is someone I would love to have a beer with. Here is a wonderful interview of Neil on the Diane Rehm show. She is painful to listen to, but thankfully he is not. I loved his discussion about being read to, how adults never get stories read to them anymore and it’s tragic. I agree entirely with his comments that it is odd to put trigger warnings on literature, especially literature for adults.
